Parties often focus on the legal aspects of divorce; however, it may also be important to protect oneself emotionally. Outlined below are some strategies to consider.

  1. Seeking emotional support: If comfortable, reaching out to friends, family, or a support group who can be a sounding board, may provide emotional support. Some people consider joining a divorce support group either in person or online.
  2. Taking care of physical health: Stress can take a physical toll on the body. Engaging in activities that promote physical well-being, such as regular exercise, healthy meals, and getting enough sleep, may be of assistance. This also includes seeing a doctor regularly for physical and other routine health care as needed.  Some people choose to also go for walks or practice meditation.
  3. Seeking professional mental help if feeling stressed or depressed: Working with a therapist or counselor who specializes in divorce or relationship issues may provide necessary emotional support. Mental health providers may be able to provide guidance on developing coping strategies for strong emotions.
  4. Grieving: Divorce may cause feelings of loss and facing changes can be challenging. A person may experience a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, and confusion. Understanding grief and how it relates to the end of a marriage may help understanding how to process emotions in a healthy way.

Everyone's divorce experience is unique, and it can be helpful to understand how divorce may affect a person emotionally and physically.
